Kapampangan artist Totek Layug together with the Municipal Government of Guagua Pampanga led the revelation of the 16-foot statue image of the Risen Christ that can be found along the section of Barangay Santa Ursula, West Lateral Dike in Betis District, Guagua Town.
The 16-foot statue was bestowed to the community of the Guagua town by Totek Layug together with his father, Presidential Merit Awardee for Ecclesiastical Art Willy Tadeo Layug.
The image of the statue of the Risen Christ is quite symbolic as it is a part of the Stations of the Cross along the dike area and serves as the final stage for the Ecclesiastical Stations of the Cross which by the way were also painted by Betis artists.
According to the Local Historian Francis Musni, The Project was started by the Barcelona-educated and promising Kapampangan artist Totek Layug on August 9, 2019, with the vision to impart his art to the public and showcase the fine artistry of local artist’s contribution to the art world.
“There is an existing sculpture of the Risen Christ in that area, but we wanted to show the community that we can come up with a more fitting rendition of Our Lord,” Totek uttered.
The statue, which rises on a view deck facing the Paglabuan Bridge, amounts to a total height of 24 feet. The statue welcomes daily commuters and motorists arriving from Minalin town and has become a main stop for motorcyclists and runners who were frequent the dike area and it’s close by to the eco-park daily.
St. James the Apostle Parish priest Rev. Fr. Raul de Los Santos recently blessed the statue and was launched by Mayor Dante Torres. The revelation of the statue of the Risen Christ was part of the culminating activity for the “Camino de Santiago” activities of St. James the Great, the Apostle Parish on the occurrence of its 450th foundation anniversary.
