I reckon that my first encounter with Mexican food was somewhat unpleasant. So, I was challenged when WIP was about to feature an authentic Mexican taqueria and cantina. That’s when I decided to give myself and Mexican food one more chance. This is where Frida Taqueria y Cantina comes in.
First, a little trivia – Frida is actually Frida Kahlo, a painter, political activist and in some ways the Mexican version of our very own Miriam Defensor Santiago.
Once you get to the place, you can’t help but notice the mural paintings, the Hispanic atmosphere, interior and even the background music that they play. True enough you can have a glimpse of the very colorful Mexican culture.
And here’s a confession, I’ve taken more than 20 snaps in my first 2 minutes at Frida. Can’t blame me, every corner has a story to tell and is very much Instagram worthy from the bar outside to their colorful table setting inside. Oh wait till you see their restroom.
Frida Taqueria y Cantina is Chef Sau del Rosario’s 3rd restaurant in Angeles City along with Cafe Fleur and 25 Seeds. During our stay at Frida, we were so delighted to have spent time with Ms. Chloe, one of the co-owners and Chef Rex who graciously prepared the best of the best of what’s in their menu.
And now we go to the ‘fiesta’ that is so oh delicioso!
Frida isn’t the usual Tex-Mex food that we were used to. Frida is an all-authentic Mexican food.
Brace yourself for your taste buds are in for a virtual treat. First on my favoritos are their appetizers, Queso Fundido (molten cheese) it’s made from home made chorizo, cheese and jalapenos which is best paired with nachos and who couldn’t resist quesadilla that varies from pork, beef or chicken with cheese, onions and pica de gallo (salsa). All with condiments on the side – pickled cucumber, pickled onion, guacamole, salsa verde or salsa roja. Another essential dish is their Beef Burrito.
Elotes (grilled sweet corn) with crema (mexican sour cream), lime-chili salt and queso cotija (similar to feta cheese but saltier and more sour) has caught my eyes for I didn’t think until today that corn on a stick could be this sophisticated.
Also, Mexican food won’t be truly Mexican without tacos. Fact: everything is fresh and made from scratch including their taco shells. You can try Al Pastor (roasted pork and pineapple) , Fish Tacos, Tacos de Lengua (beef tongue with onion leeks, Carne Asada (grilled US hanging tender steak) salsa verde and queso fresco (fresh cheese). Another is Alam y Celia (fried mahi-mahi, chipotle aioli, pico de gallo and red cabbage.
Saving the best for last are 2 among their main dishes. First is their Cumin – Coriander Crusted Hanging Tender Steak with sweet potato hash and chimichurri. And the dish that made my day
Pollo Ala Plancha (flat grilled chicken) with Frida signature ‘secret’ spices with Mexican rice. I have no words for this but you just have got to try it.
Of course I wouldn’t miss their Churros and Tres Leches (baked sponge cake soaked in 3 different kinds of milk for 48 hours before they serve it).
So we’re almost there, Mexican ambiance, Mexican food, Mexican music and finally, Mexican drinks. Yes, what’s interesting about their drinks is that they are the first restaurant to offer imported Mexican sodas aside from their luscious cocktails and cerveza (beer). And just in case you are wondering, yes – they definitely serve local alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks too.
If there is one thing that I will be taking away after this feature is that how they lived up to what they promise their customers and that is authenticity and they were able to manage to keep their prices competitive without having to compromise on quality.
And just so you know, I’m already set to go back with my friends next week and possibly could become one of our chill nights tambayan. That’s how beyond satisfied and fascinated I was with my Frida Taqueria y Cantina experience.
Vamos a Frida, vamonos!
